Frequently Asked Questions

A limited licence permits individuals who have been disqualified or suspended from driving to operate a vehicle under specific conditions. These conditions typically restrict driving to certain times, routes, and purposes, such as employment-related activities. The primary aim is to mitigate extreme hardship to the individual or undue hardship to others dependent on the individual's ability to drive.

Yes, generally you will have to attend Court, but don't worry - we'll guide you through this whole process.

Eligibility depends on several factors, including the nature of the disqualification or suspension and the applicant's driving history. Generally, you may be eligible if you can demonstrate that not having a licence causes extreme hardship to yourself or undue hardship to others. However, certain convictions, such as driving while disqualified or repeat alcohol-related offences, may disqualify you from applying.

We offer a guaranteed fixed fee to prepare the licence application. Live chat (below), or call Jenny Hannah now on 021 851 637. If we don't answer, we will get back to you within 60 minutes. Court filing fees:

  • Disqualified driver: $150
  • or Suspended driver (due to demerit points): $260
  • In some cases a Court sealing fee may apply: $50
  • Obtain your limited licence from NZTA: $48.70

The timeframe can vary. If you've been disqualified due to a court conviction, there's typically a mandatory 28-day stand-down period before you can receive a limited licence. However, we can prepare your application during this period. For suspensions due to demerit points, there is no stand-down period, but the application process itself can take time. It's recommended to begin the process as soon as possible to account for any delays. Urgent applications can be processed within 48 hours, for lodgement with Court.

The conditions are tailored to the applicant's specific circumstances, but generally include:

  • Driving to and from a place of employment.
  • Operating a vehicle as part of work duties; ie a courier, truck driver, real estate agent etc
  • Transporting dependents for essential activities, such as school runs, or medical reasons.

These conditions are strictly defined, and any deviation can result in severe penalties.

Driving outside the specified conditions is treated as driving while disqualified. Consequences can include vehicle impoundment, additional disqualification periods, substantial fines, and potential criminal convictions. It's imperative to adhere strictly to the terms set out in your limited licence.

Please don't do this!

Please don’t!! Driving while suspended is a serious offence. Police and the courts take it very seriously, even if you're driving for work.

If caught, the vehicle you're driving will be impounded for 28 days (costing around $600–$900), and you'll be arrested for driving while suspended. This is a criminal offence, not just a licence suspension. Penalties may include:

  • A $750 fine
  • An automatic 6-month disqualification
  • A criminal conviction

Worse still, you’ll no longer be eligible to apply for a Limited Licence, meaning you can’t legally drive at all for the duration of your sentence. That conviction must also be declared to employers, landlords, and for overseas travel for 7 years. Right now, your suspension is a civil matter. Don’t make it a criminal one.

Every driver begins with a clean slate — zero demerit points. But traffic offences like speeding, holding a phone while driving, or not wearing a seatbelt will cause you to earn demerit points.

If you rack up 100 or more active points within a 2-year period, your licence will be automatically suspended. During this suspension time, you’re not allowed to drive at all. Call us and we'll talk you through it.
